Introduction:
In this post we have organized a list of poets of Urdu literature who are admitted as the legends of their era and onward times. Their writings, verses and pieces of literature contributed in the flourishing of Urdu language. Without these legends, Urdu could not become such a vast language that whole sub continent knows Urdu and understands it to some extent.
Though English has become international language due to which our new generation is going towards English and far from Urdu. But still, there are many Urdu speaking scholars and lobby who are doing hard work to maintain the values of our sweet national language.
I have enlisted all these poets according to their quality, experience, level of thinking, skills, knowledge, and conveying ability of their content. Top fifteen Urdu Poets of Urdu literature are mentioned in this list. There is also a link of a YouTube video given below, in which this ranking is present in a concise way.

15- Abbas Tabish
Abbas tabish holds the 15th position in this list due to his unique style of poetry. He is a renowned poet of current era who is very famous among the literary personalities of both, India and Pakistan. He wrote many books like Aasman and Ishq-Abaad. He genuinely wrote master pieces in Urdu.
14- John Elia
John Elia who is also called "The Poet of Depression & Anxiety" is the most famous and splendid poet of previous century. His style of writing and reciting, both were very strange and full of pain. He always enjoyed all "Mehfil-E-Mushaira" in his life in which he was always match winning player.
13- Anwar Masood
Anwar Masood is an only legend in his field of poetry. His place in this list is due to his quality, skills, style of fun and entertainment which is mind blowing. He introduced a new and unique type of Poetry in which he always amuse people in the layer of bitter reality of society. He write funny poetry along with seldom serious verses.
12- Faiz Ahmed Faiz
Faiz Ahmed Faiz needs no introduction because he was the most astonishing poet of Urdu literature having a different style of poetry than all others. He started modern classical poetry in Urdu language. After his writings almost all poets are writing to follow his style. He was truly a legend of Urdu Adab.
11- Altaf Hussain Hali
Author of "Musaddas-E Hali"- Altaf Husain Hali was a pupil of great poet of Urdu language- the Great Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan Ghalib. He was a great poet, writer and literary scholar of his era. His Musaddas was such a great piece of literature consisted of Islamic revolution and current situation of Muslims that Sir Syed Ahmed Ali Khan praised this book by saying a sentence that "When Angels would ask me that what had you brought, then I would Musaddas-E Hali and say "I brought this book"".
10- Dagh Dehlvi
Dagh was an outstanding poet famous for his Urdu Ghazals and he belonged to old school of Delhi. Dagh was his pen name or Takhallus. He wrote simple and best Urdu ghazals in which he used very less Persian words. Dagh Dehlvi was a respected poet of his time and was called romantic poet. Mirza Dagh Dehlvi is number ten in the list of ranking of Urdu Poets.
9- Bahadur Shah Zafar
Bahadur Shah Zafar also called Zafar-2 who was last Mughal emperor. He was appointed as King due to British Empire who limited his government only in Shahjahanabad (Dehli). He was not allowed to govern anything as he had no authority or control over forces and treasures. His poetry was full of pain, softness, sensitivity, love, affection, last times, reality of life and such painful feelings that whoever will read his poetry will cry. He is number 9 in the list of top Urdu poets.
8- Momin Khan Momin
Momin Khan Momin was companion poet of Mirza Ghalib, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Ibrahim Zauq and some other poets of that era. He used very difficult language in his poetry by including many terms and words from Persian language. Overall he was a poet of Ghazal. He wrote such legendary poetry verses that no one can compete him in his category. Momin Khan Momin was gone to death in early age of 45. He holds 8th position in ranking of Urdu Poets.
7- Ibrahim Zauq
Ustad Ibrahim Zauq was the master of Bahadur Shah Zafar and poet of government. Hazrat Ibrahim Zouq was full of skills of Urdu Persian Literature because he used such terms in his poetry that no other poet could use. His poetry is complex but very interesting and versatile. He is 7th best poet of Urdu language.
6- Mirza Muhammad Rafi Sauda
Mirza Rafi Sauda was an Urdu Poet from Dehli specially famous for his Qasidas and Ghazals. He was born in 1713 in Shahjahanabad. Quli Khan and Shah Hatim were masters of Rafi Sauda who teach him the ways of poetry. Initially Mirza Rafi Sauda was a Persian poet but then converted to Urdu poetry by his masters. He wrote many Masnavis and other books. His style of poetry was unique and full of skills and experience so he got 6th position in the list of Urdu poets.
5- Akbar Allahabadi
Akbar Rizvi also known as Akbar Allahabadi was born in 1846 mainly famous for satire in his poetry. There were published three Kulliyat of Akbar in which his legendary type of Urdu poetry was present. Hangama Hai Kyun Barpa Thori C Jo Pee Li Hai is written by Akbar Allahabadi sung by Ghulam Ali. He was such an excellent poet of Urdu that he had written in every style which can be manipulated in this language. He was the legend of Urdu Literature.
4- Allama Muhammad Iqbal
Sir Muhammad Iqbal widely known as Allama Iqbal was a Philosopher, Poet, Barrister, Politician and a Scholar of his era. He is the national poet of Pakistan also called spiritual poet. He had written Islamic Verses which reflect the book of Allah- The Holy Quran. Indeed no one can compete Allama Muhammad Iqbal who inspired the new generation and he gave the idea of Self Esteem in an unique style. His thoughts and ideas were the main factor in the freedom of Pakistan.
3- Khwaja Meer Dard
Khwaja Mir Dard was born in 1720. He was the part of Delhi School and was a Sufi poet. His chain was connected with Naqshbandi Silsila. He was a mystic poet who had translated his mysticism into verses. He had written the poetry at that time when Urdu was not a notable language. He introduced a new thing in the genre of Urdu poetry which was not yet added to this language due to it's limits. Dard has his place in this list as number three top poet of Urdu literature.
2- Mirza Ghalib
Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan Ghalib was born in 1797 was a prominent Persian and Urdu language poet having a lot of skills, language knowledge, full command of Urdu Poetry, bombastic mind and thoughts of heavens. He was the strangest poet of all the times. His poetry is the master piece of Urdu Adab. Urdu had not created the son like Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib.
1- Meer Taqi Meer
"Khuda-E-Sukhan Mir Taqi Mir is the number one poet of Urdu language and literature. He is also called "King of Urdu Ghazal" due to his highest thoughts of pain, love and affection. He had written in all the fields of life, love, religion, Sufism, realities, bitterness, sweetness, and many more. Mir Taqi Mir is such a poet that every poet of each era praised him due to his most different style of poetry.
